Dragon Boat Challenge

The Dragon Boat Challenge will be held on Saturday, 3 March 2012 on Lake Illawarra. The venue for the day is Skiway Park, The Esplanade, Oak Flats, 9am- 3pm.
Local businesses and community organisations are encouraged to enter a team of 20 people to challenge one another on Lake Illawarra. Dragon Boats NSW provide the boats and sweepers and the community is encouraged to come down and support the teams and cheer them on.

The 2011 event saw 22 teams participate with four new teams (Ainsworth, Pioneer Red Indians, Savvy Fitness South and Playball Shellharbour) joining the challenge. This year also saw the introduction of school teams. Albion Park High School, Corpus Christi Catholic College, Illawarra Christian College and a joint team of Edmund Rice and St Marys participated.

The weather started out fine but during the end of the day saw us compete in the rain, however the wind kept away. After a morning of heats the major final saw teams Vision, RTA, Pioneers Fitness Pirates and Gongbusters take to the Lake for the perpetual trophy. It was a very close challenge but in the end Pioneer Fitness Pirates came in first with a time of 1.26.07 followed by Vision with a time of 1.28.57 with the RTA hot on their heels with a time of 1.29.95 and Gongbusters chasing up the rear with a time of 1.29.85.

The school final saw SMERC 2 come in first with a time of 1.28.96, followed by Corpus Christi Catholic College at a time of 1.35.04. Albion Park High School was hot on their heels with a time of 1.35.81 with Illawarra Christian School coming in 4th place with a time of 1.39.01
